Former U.S. senator and Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted Friday to an extramarital affair.

He was quoted by CNN:

Edwards told the network that his rise from “a small town boy in North Carolina” who “came from nothing” to a successful lawyer, U.S. senator and national public figure “fed a self-focus, an egotism, a narcissism that leads you to believe that you can do whatever you want.”

I wrote a post on narcissism recently: Rude and Offensive Bloggers - Emotional Vampires? This post looks at the behaviour of individuals afflicted with pathological narcissism.
I offer Mr. Edwards my condolences, but I thank him for
bringing the world’s attention to the general problem of narcissism. Wikipedia says:

Pathological narcissism occurs over a broad
spectrum of severity. In its more extreme forms, it is
narcissistic personality disorder.
While Mr. Edwards’ narcissism may not be pathological,
it raises the broader question of other political leaders having similar problems.
