The Sunday Sun ran an article by Heather-Lynn Anderson today, September 14, 2008. You will find this article, DPP’S MOVE, on the back page. Here is a quote:
|
THE DECISION of a magistrate to reprimand and discharge a lawyer who had 50 illegal parking tickets is not sitting well with the island’s top prosecutor.
|
The article identifies the lawyer as Nicole Nurse of Carmichael Heights, St. George. The magistrate was Christopher Birch.
Barbados Director of Public Prosecutions Charles Leacock has asked the Court of Appeal to decide if the Magistrate’s order was “unduly lenient in the circumstances”.
.
Rule of Law
“The Rule of Law, in its most basic form, is the principle that no one is above the law.” (Wikipedia) My observation is that many high-level Barbadians are not held accountable.
The Government is willing to pay lip service to the concept of “Rule of Law”. It is put into proposals with other countries, like the EPA draft below. Despite its words, the Government appears unwilling to pursue high-level offenders. This latest action by the DPP may be intended to show that no one is above the law. I wonder if Ronja Juman will be impressed by Leacock’s action!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackPrior to this matter, the Chairman of the Sanitation Service Authority stated that at the time of the then dismissal of the SSA General Manager that a file was sent by the SSA Board to the DPP which file purpotedly contained certain evidence implicating the GM in illegal acts. What has happened with that file? the Gm is back and still on the job and the SSA Board is yet to resign.
