Newsday - The morality of capitalism

Luckily, I never took out any insurance with Clico for, had I done so, I would have been forced to stop doing business with them in 2006, when CL Financial chairman Lawrence Duprey testified under oath that he had given $1 million as a scholarship fund to the daughters of Basdeo and Oma Panday. I rather suspect, however, that only a few of Clico’s policy-holders or shareholders would have seen this as sufficient reason to take their money out of the conglomerate. This is because most people don’t see financial success as resting on ethical probity. Yet the market cannot be efficient unless it is also moral.
